About Us
Location: L'Auberge Carmel is located in the heart of Carmel-by-the-Sea, one block from Ocean Avenue on Monte Verde Street at Seventh and four blocks from world famous Carmel Beach. The quaint village has a population of 5,000 residents. Since its founding in 1906, Carmel has been recognized internationally as an artists' colony.
Accommodations: L'Auberge Carmel features 20 luxuriously appointed guest rooms in a three story building. The Inn’s European style architecture focuses around a classic brick courtyard and upper floor rooms offer a peek of Carmel Bay. A complete renovation of the historic Inn was completed in August 2004, making L’Auberge Carmel one of the village by the sea’s few full service inns offering guests valet parking, room service, a restaurant on premises, and highly personalized guest services.

History: Originally built in 1929, the classic inn was commissioned by one of early Carmel’s most colorful figures, Allen Knight. His ideas were realized by noted San Francisco architect Albert Farr. Farr was also the architect for “Glen Allyn” in Sonoma County, the first home of Jack London. The construction work was done by Carmel’s master-builder Michael J. Murphy. The collaboration resulted in a three story wood frame and stucco building that captured the aesthetic sense of Carmel as a village in the forest.
Dining: Executive Chef Christophe Grosjean prepares fresh from the garden and farm contemporary California cuisine with European influences, offering a dining experience akin to a Michelin starred restaurant. The 12-table restaurant features an underground wine cellar that was constructed beneath the inn's courtyard to house the restaurant's 4,500 bottle collection. The wine list features great wines from around the world but especially wines from Monterey County, California and France.

Weddings: The European influenced architecture of the Inn’s brick courtyard is a perfect setting for intimate wedding ceremonies. It is filled with colorful flowers, groupings of teak outdoor furniture and a soothing water fountain.
Sister Restaurant: Cantinetta Luca, is located on Dolores Street between 7th and Ocean. Luca specializes in antipasti, a dozen or so varieties of salumis and handmade pasta. Whole fish and roasted meats are served family style. All of the presentations are simple and rustic; food prepared with fresh seasonal ingredients to bring out bold flavors.
